One Product, On Purpose
Homeowners sometimes ask why our estimates only ever mention one siding brand. It's a fair question — most exterior contractors in the Tampa Bay area carry two or three product lines and let the homeowner pick based on budget. We don't do that. We install James Hardie fiber cement siding, and nothing else. Not vinyl, not LP SmartSide, not Cemplank or Allura fiber cement, not primed spruce or cedar lap. This page explains the reasoning, plainly, so you can decide whether it matches what you want for your own house.
This isn't a marketing gimmick. Standardizing on one product means our crews install the same system on every job, week after week, on hundreds of homes across St. Petersburg and Pinellas County. That repetition is what makes an installation crew genuinely good at something, instead of being competent at five different things.

What Pinellas County Siding Actually Has to Survive
St. Petersburg sits on a peninsula surrounded by Tampa Bay and the Gulf. That geography is beautiful and it's brutal on a house exterior. Siding here has to hold up against:
- Hurricane-force wind loads — not just the named storms, but the routine summer squall lines that push sideways rain into every seam and joint.
- Wind-driven rain intrusion — Florida building code treats this as a serious design factor for a reason; water finds gaps that look fine on a dry, calm day.
- Near-constant UV exposure — Pinellas County gets more sun hours than almost anywhere else in the continental US, and UV is what breaks down pigments and surface coatings over time.
- Salt air — even a few miles inland from the bay, airborne salt accelerates corrosion of fasteners and degrades finishes that aren't formulated for it.
Every siding material on the market has to answer to those four conditions. Some answer better than others, and the differences show up not in year one, but around year eight to fifteen — which is exactly when a homeowner least wants a siding problem.
Why We Don't Install Vinyl
Vinyl siding is inexpensive, lightweight, and installs quickly — we understand the appeal. But vinyl is a thin plastic panel that expands and contracts with heat, and Florida gives it plenty of heat to react to. In direct summer sun on a west-facing wall, vinyl can soften, warp, or pull loose from its nailing hem over time. In a hurricane-strength wind event, vinyl's wind-load ratings are real but the panels are still thin relative to fiber cement, and once a panel starts to lift at a corner, wind gets underneath it. Vinyl also can't be painted a dark, rich color without risking heat-related warping, which limits the design options homeowners actually want in this market. We don't think it's the wrong product for every climate — we think it's the wrong product for this one.
Why We Don't Install LP SmartSide
LP SmartSide is an engineered wood product — wood strands bonded with resin and treated with a zinc-borate coating for moisture and pest resistance. It's a legitimate product with real fans in drier climates. The concern for us is that it's still wood at its core. Wood-based siding depends entirely on an intact factory coating and unbroken caulking at every seam and cut edge to keep water out. In a coastal, high-humidity environment with wind-driven rain, any breach — a missed caulk line, a nail that backs out, a corner that wasn't sealed correctly — gives moisture a path into a material that can swell, delaminate, or take on rot from the inside where you can't see it. We've chosen not to carry the maintenance risk that comes with an engineered wood product in this specific climate.
Why We Don't Install Other Fiber Cement Brands
This one surprises people. Cemplank and Allura are also fiber cement — the same base material as James Hardie. So why not install those too? Two reasons. First, James Hardie engineers specific product lines for specific climate zones (more on that below), and we haven't seen that same level of regional engineering from the other brands. Second, warranty and finish consistency matter as much as the raw material. James Hardie's ColorPlus factory finish process and its warranty structure are backed by a company that has been refining fiber cement specifically for high-humidity, high-UV, storm-exposed regions for decades. Installing one brand exclusively also means our crews never mix installation specs, fastener schedules, or clearance requirements between jobs — which is where a lot of siding failures actually originate, in a crew applying one brand's rules to another brand's panel.
What James Hardie Gets Right for This Climate
It's Non-Combustible
Fiber cement is roughly 90% sand, cement, and cellulose fiber. It doesn't burn, warp from heat the way vinyl does, or provide fuel in an ember-driven fire event. That's a meaningful difference in wind-exposed coastal wildfire and ember scenarios, and it's part of why many insurers view fiber cement favorably.
HZ5 Engineering for Coastal Humidity
James Hardie makes climate-specific product formulations under its HZ (HardieZone) system. HZ5 is engineered for hot, humid regions like the Gulf Coast — denser, moisture-resistant formulation built for exactly the humidity and wind-driven rain profile St. Petersburg deals with every summer. That's a level of climate-specific engineering vinyl and engineered wood products don't offer.
ColorPlus Factory Finish
Rather than field-painting siding after installation (where quality depends heavily on weather conditions and crew technique that day), Hardie's ColorPlus finish is baked on in a controlled factory process, then backed by its own separate finish warranty. It holds color and resists UV fading better than most field-applied paint, which matters under Florida's sun load.
Real, Transferable Warranty Coverage
James Hardie backs its siding with a non-prorated limited warranty on the substrate and a separate finish warranty on ColorPlus products, and that coverage is transferable to a new owner if you sell the home — a detail that matters for resale in this market.

Installation Is Where It's Actually Won or Lost
Even the best siding material fails early if it's installed wrong. James Hardie publishes detailed installation specs — fastener type and spacing, minimum clearances from grade and roofing, caulking requirements at every joint, and specific guidance for high-wind zones. A crew that installs one product exclusively internalizes those specs instead of juggling different rules for different brands. Before you hire anyone for a siding project in Pinellas County, it's worth asking pointed questions:
- Are they a certified or preferred James Hardie installer, and can they explain HZ5 versus standard HZ10 products?
- What fastener type and spacing do they use, and does it match Hardie's published spec for this wind zone?
- What clearance do they leave between the bottom of the siding and grade, decks, or roofing?
- How do they detail caulking and flashing at windows, doors, and butt joints?
- Do they carry current general liability and workers' comp insurance, and will they put warranty terms in writing?
- Can they show you homes they've completed in this area, not just renderings?
Any contractor who can't answer those clearly and specifically hasn't earned the job, regardless of what brand they're proposing.
